The School of Materials Science & Engineering (MSE) offers outreach programs to visiting high schools, middle schools, teachers and counselors, parents of prospective students, and industry professionals, as well as to current Georgia Tech students. The majority of the outreach is geared toward recruiting students into MSE as well as to educating the public about the career opportunities the program provides.

High School Outreach

Yearly, high school students and their parents are invited to campus for the annual MSE Career Day. They hear presentations on materials, tour the labs, are informed of current research initiatives, and interact with faculty and current students.  Participants receive free football tickets to the Tech game played on the day of the event.

Participation in On-campus Outreach Events

MSE’s enrollment office takes part each year in Tech's Engineering and Computing Conference, all Connect-with-Tech Sessions, Girls’ Night Out, Family Affair, Futures, President’s Scholarship Weekend, and Welcome Weekend as well as entertains visits from interested prospective Tech students and their parents.

GHOST

The Georgia High School Outreach for Science and Technology Program (GHOST) is designed to teach students about materials science and give them a new perspective on engineering. Through the GHOST program, MSE graduate students visit school classrooms in metro-Atlanta, and give hands-on demonstrations about a range of topics, demonstrating the application of metals, ceramics, composites, polymers, biomaterials, and nanomaterials. These interactive demonstrations highlight how exciting materials science and energies can be, to encourage student interest in pursuing studies in MSE or other science fields.

In addition to promoting MSE within metro-Atlanta classrooms, MSE students also offer guided tours of labs at Georgia Tech to student groups from Atlanta area. During their visit, students tour a variety of MSE labs, observing lab demonstrations and discuss research applications. The objective of both programs is to reach all types of students, both those highly motivated and those less interested in science, and ignite their enthusiasm for learning about science and technology.

Industry Outreach

The School has organized a series of workshops for the carpet industry with input on topics from carpet industry representatives. Each spring MSE sponsors a workshop on recycling of carpet, textile, and polymer fibrous waste in Dalton, Georgia. This workshop has been ongoing for nearly a decade and is well-attended and well-received by approximately one hundred industry participants.

Prominent Lecture Series

The School sponsors the annual Brumley-Pritchett Lecture series, inviting a researcher of national prominence to campus to present to faculty, students, and staff.
